Luke 1:45 (NKJV)
"Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord."
I came across this scripture a couple of years ago on Pinterest, and I was quite fascinated by it. At that point in my life, I wasn't reading the Bible regularly; I simply enjoyed looking at scriptures on Pinterest. So when I came across this verse, it stood out to me, even though I didn't fully understand the context at the time.
Here's the context.
After Mary encountered the angel and was told that she would give birth to the Saviour, the angel also informed her that her relative Elizabeth, who had been called barren, was already pregnant with John the Baptist. When Mary went to visit Elizabeth, the child in Elizabeth's womb leaped for joy. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke these words to Mary:
"Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord."
Now that we've laid the foundation, I've been thinking about Mary's participation in the conception of Jesus.
Yes, Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit while Mary was still a virgin and engaged to Joseph. Yet Luke 1:45 highlights something significant: "Blessed is she who believed." I believe that Mary's faith was her participation in what God was doing. Her belief was her response to God's word. When the angel spoke, she chose to trust what seemed impossible.
As the body of Christ, I don't think we talk about Mary very often, but she is truly a fascinating character. I often wonder what went through her mind when she received the word of the Lord. Did she worry that Joseph would leave her? (He almost did, until God intervened.) Did she fear what people would say about her? Could it be that the word of the Lord and the One she would bring into the earth made everything else seem insignificant?
Imagine the honour and privilege of bringing your Lord and Saviour into the world. Through her Son, all generations would call her blessed, just as she declared in Luke 1:48.
Belief is an act of faith, and faith is "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). Throughout Scripture, we see the fruit of belief.
Here are a few examples:
- Mary believed what was told to her by the angel, and she gave birth to our Saviour (Luke 1:45).
- If we believe in Jesus, we receive eternal life (John 3:16).
- Jairus' daughter was raised from the dead after Jesus encouraged her father, saying, "Do not be afraid; only believe" (Mark 5:36).
As we step into this new week, let us believe more.
Let us believe that we are loved and chosen. Let us believe that God has a plan for our lives and that, despite our circumstances, His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are greater than our thoughts. Let us believe that this will be a beautiful week and that we will experience His presence. Let us believe that His Word never fails.
The angel told Mary that she would conceive and bring forth a Son. Because she believed, the Saviour entered the world. Through Jesus Christ, you and I are saved from the wages of sin. Because she believed, we know Jesus Christ, who died for our sins, rose again, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Mary's belief was her participation in what God was doing, not the source of salvation itself. Jesus is the source of salvation.
In conclusion, let us believe in Him, because we have evidence throughout Scripture that His Word never fails.
